My wife and I decided to go to Disneyland last week. One of those promises that I had to pay up on. It was supposed to be just a one day road trip but some things happen and we decided to stay overnight. Having the extra time opened up my schedule so I jumped in on visiting Conde Koma Bjj in Los Alamitos. It was about a 20 minute drive from where I was staying so as I drove over the closer I got to my destination I found myself getting more and more nervous. That’s really nothing new for me. I hate meeting new people and being in unfamiliar surroundings but at the same time I love visiting schools.
I pulled in, signed the waiver, and got dressed. It’s a nice and very welcoming gym full of KILLERS! I’ll explain more about the killers portion in a bit. The gym itself is laid out nicely. They have two separate changing areas and a room with a TV where the kids were kept entertained. Which I imagine would be a huge plus for parents who can’t always get a babysitter.
We lined up and and immediately got into warm-ups. As we were getting through them I noticed a purple belt who was motivating a pretty new white belt. From what I could tell, they were together and possibly married. He was very encouraging of her. She didn’t know all the movements and struggled to keep up but he continued to both push and motivate her as he talked her through. It was actually a very touching thing to see and reflected greatly on the school and it’s environment.
After instruction we did some specific situation sparring. Tonight’s positions were half guard and closed guard. A set number of people started on the mat and would have to stay for the entire round. I’ve been visiting different schools for a while now and have always been able to at least hold my own. Not on this night. On this night I was abused and abused thoroughly. Nothing seemed to work and all I could do was try to survive. It’s a very helpless feeling and a bit of an eye opener. These guys ran through my guard with such ease. Like I said, these guys are KILLERS!
While most people would have just deleted the night from their memory and completely forget the blog post they intended to write, I welcomed it. This is one of the main reasons I want to visit these schools. I want to see what other schools are doing and how they do it. I don’t want to limit myself to one ideology or thought process when addressing my training. So while I got my ass handed to me, I needed it and look forward to my next trip out there. I thank them for being so hospitable during my visit. This place is definitely a place that I’d train at if I lived in the area.
