I recently attended a close friend’s birthday celebration for his one year old daughter. As I don’t have any kids, I normally skip out on these events all together. But Dean and his family on the other hand were a different situation all together for me. I’ve been friends with Dean for a few years now, since our white belt days of grinding away towards our blue. So to say the least, we’ve gotten to know each other pretty well.
When Dean and his wife Rachel found out they were pregnant we were incredibly happy for them but things became extremely difficult when the doctor gave them some heart wrenching news about Lily’s prospects. I was saddened for them and I can still remember how broken up Dean was and how difficult it was to see a friend you love having to go through something such as this.
Much like you should do with Jiu-Jitsu. While in the middle of this immense struggle, their hearts and spirit shown through and have become AMAZING parents to one of the most beautiful little girls I have ever met. A lot can be learned from them as people and as parents. It’s been a blessing and an honor to know the three of them.
