I’ve come across many personalities in my time in Jiu-Jitsu, one of which has been this guest blogger. He’s always been an encouraging and supportive teammate. Someone who has this easy going personality who enjoys poking fun at himself and life’s situations. With his humor I decided that I’d ask if he would be up for sharing his exploits. He agreed as long as he was from here on out referred to as.. “FunkyDaddyJ”.
I hope you enjoy Jiu-Jitsu through his eyes.
By now you’ve read several of David’s blogs on various Jiu-Jitsu topics. You’ve found his articles to be inspiring, informative, and vibrantly descriptive. You navigate to his “Guest Blogger” section hoping to find the names of Gracie or Machado, but you find me. “Ah shoot, what the hell is this crap? Has Jiu-Jitsu Journal been hacked? Did I get redirected to another site?”
Unfortunately…. NO! Let me introduce myself. My name is JimC. I met David at the Rebellion Academy. We had one of those polite introductions during class but continued a Facebook friendship after. David has since moved on but I am just beginning my Bjj journey at Rebellion. I am as new as a white belt can be. My Gi still has the creases and still has the new cotton smell. I am on my 8th lesson to date and as confused about Bjj as anyone starting this form of martial hurts… errr, I mean, martial arts. And if you were wondering, here is the tale of the tape. I am 45 years old, 5 foot 6 inches and weight 245 pounds. If you’re imagining a Filipino Mike Tyson of sorts, you are mistaken.
I am more of a Homer Simpson with a lot more hair and higher IQ. So why am I here? David asked to write about my journey into Bjj. He thought Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from the eyes of a “non-athletic, beer drinking, computer nerd”, would be a refreshing insight into this sport of ground fighting. In the upcoming weeks, I hope to share with you my Jiu-Jitsu experiences. Whether I pass out during the warm-ups or am tapped out by a 98 pound girl, I will try to give you a peak into my world. So it begins…
